The World’s Longest Yard Sale (127 Yard Sale) is an annual event held the first Thursday to Sunday of August, stretching 690 miles along Highway 127 from Addison, Michigan to Gadsden, Alabama, passing through Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. This yearly event started in 1987, organised by Mike Walker of Fentress County in Tennessee with the purpose of drawing travellers through rural communities and small towns along scenic routes rather than interstate highways. Participating vendors set up wherever they can along the route: front yards, fields, barns, empty lots, churches, and town centres. Vendors sell just about everything, including antiques, collectibles, furniture, jewellery, clothing, tools, glassware, musical instruments, books, toys, farm equipment, and food.
Some sections of the route have large clusters of vendors grouped together, known as Major Vendor Stops, while others are more spread out. Realistically, most people can cover 50 to 75 miles per day given traffic and the frequent stopping for shopping. The full 690-mile route is not something most people complete in the four days of the event, so planning a section in advance based on your starting point is the practical approach.
Market info
- Entrance fee: Free
- Tips:
- Bring cash because there might be no ATM nearby. Some vendors might accept credit cards.
- On opening time: There’s no set “opening” or “closing” time for the individual sales along the 127 Yard Sale route. Each vendor chooses the time they want to “open for business”. However, typically vendors open between 8:00-9:00 AM and stay open until 5:00 PM on average. Some stay open late into the evening and even until dark.
