The Vogelenmarkt (Bird Market) is probably the most famous and oldest markets in Antwerp, Belgium. In recent years it has become a bit of a tourist attraction. The market mostly lost its original purpose of professionals buying and selling racing pigeons, carrier pigeons, exotic birds and other small pets. You can hardly find birds for sale anymore (with only a few remaining vendors on the Graanmarkt around the corner), as it has transformed into a more generic market where you can buy flowers, antiques, textiles, jewellery, and more.
The market takes place at Oudevaartplaats, Theaterplein and surrounding areas. It’s open even on official holidays – one of the few markets that continues during Easter, Pentecost, and when Christmas or New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday.
The number of stands that still actually sell birds has decreased significantly in recent years. In most parts of the Vogelenmarkt in Antwerp, such as the Theaterplein, no live animals are sold anymore. Only on the Graanmarkt are there still a few traders selling live songbirds and poultry.
