The Nieuwmarkt is a square in the historic centre of Amsterdam. Surrounding the square are historic buildings, numerous restaurants and bars, a supermarket, and residential buildings.
During the week, the Nieuwmarkt square hosts a small market with a few stalls selling produce, flowers, cheese, accessories, jewellery, and fresh food. The real action is reserved for Saturday, when the square turns into an organic farmers’ market. It’s the perfect place to stock up for the week on fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, bread, olive oil, condiments and more directly from the producers or from small distributors.
In the summer months (usually from May to October), there’s also an antique market on Sundays with vendors offering a selection of antiques, bric-a-brac, secondhand books and more.
Besides the markets, a number of events and activities take place on the Nieuwmarkt throughout the year, such as the “Aprilfeesten” during the week before King’s Day on April 27th or “Buddha’s Birthday” celebrated by the Chinese community. The Nieuwmarkt borders the Wallen (Red Light District), and Chinatown. Due to the significant number of Chinese residents and businesses in the neighbourhood, the street signs in the area are written in both Dutch and Chinese.
