The Thouars market have taken place in the center of the city for at least 700 years. Place Lavault hosts two markets every week: a smaller one on Tuesdays with mostly food and regional products and a bigger one on Fridays with 114 vendors offering food and textiles both outdoors on Place Lavault and inside the covered market hall built in 1920.
At the height of the summer season, there can up to 200 vendors offering their usual products and the region’s traditional melons. All year round, you can also find local delicacies such as boiled eels (la bouilliture d’anguilles), green garlic goat (chevreau à l’ail vert), goose compote from Poitou (la compote d’oie à la poitevine) or sorrel soup. You can also get Duhomard, a local vermouth that goes perfectly with Thouars’s famous frangipane macarons.
Voted as the 6th most beautiful market in France in 2023.
