The Salzburg Christmas Market (Salzburger Christkindlmarkt) stands as one of the world’s oldest and most enchanting holiday markets. Nestled within Salzburg’s UNESCO World Heritage Site at the Domplatz and Residenzplatz, this market combines centuries of tradition with a magical Alpine setting.
Approximately 100 traditional wooden stalls line the historic square, offering authentic Austrian holiday treasures including handcrafted Christmas decorations, incense for creating festive home atmospheres, unique gifts, and delicious local specialties. The distinctive star-shaped lighting suspended above creates a romantic ambiance that enchants both international visitors and locals alike.
Beyond shopping, the market hosts a rich program of daily events, such as choir sing-alongs, traditional wind music performances from the surrounding towers, weekly appearances by Salzburg’s “Christ Child” (Christkindl) with angels, special children’s readings, Krampus parades and guided Christmas tours.
The celebration continues as a New Year’s Eve market on December 31st, culminating with midnight fireworks to welcome the new year. On January 1st, food and beverage stalls remain open until 6 pm, providing a perfect conclusion to the holiday season in this historic Austrian city.
Market tips
- If you like a sweet treat, make sure to try the Mozartknödel (Mozart dumplings)! These sweet little dumplings are filled with Mozartkugel, a small, round sugar confection made of pistachio, marzipan, and nougat that is covered with Austrian dark chocolate. They are rolled in buttered breadcrumbs and served with vanilla sauce. Scrumptious!
- Check out the stall selling beautiful Austrian and Hungarian blue dye (Blaudruck (DE) or kékfestő (HU)) textiles such as aprons, tea towels, table cloths and more. They are crafted using traditional methods, yet their beautiful bright blue hue allows them to integrate perfectly into modern interiors as well.
