The Lienz Christmas Market (Lienzer Adventmarkt) takes place on the main square (Hauptplatz) and at the Liebburg (the town hall) from November 21 to December 24, 2025. Lienz is a historic town in East Tyrol, Austria, not to be confused with Linz, the larger city in Upper Austria. Click here to see the Christmas markets in Linz.
Under the motto “Advent in Lienz – Being a child again,” the market transforms the town centre with artfully decorated stalls, string lights, fire pits, and the scent of gingerbread, Kiachln, mulled wine and hot tea, accompanied by festive music.
The market features over 30 stalls selling original gift ideas, Christmas decorations, traditional crafts and culinary specialties. Highlights include the famous Original Lienzer Lebzelt 1644® – a traditional gingerbread filled with Tyrolean cranberries.
Special attractions include a workshop where craftspeople demonstrate their skills, a nativity scene exhibition in the Liebburg (5-14 December), and the spectacular Krampus parades on 3rd, 5th, and 6th December. Each evening at 6:30pm, a window of the large advent calendar on the town hall opens to reveal artwork by local artists.
A night watchman with his halberd makes rounds through the market, helping visitors and ending the market day at 9pm with his traditional night call.
