The Altwiener Advent Market am Freyung, also known as the Old Viennese Christmas Market, is one of the finest during the holiday season in Vienna. Located in the Freyung, an open area surrounded by the ancient Schottenstift abbey and townhouses of former nobility, this market captures the essence of traditional Viennese Christmas.
Approximately 60 exhibitors welcome visitors with unique handicrafts, outstanding Christmas decorations, and various other offerings. The market is family-friendly, featuring children’s programs in the morning and evening music performances that create a delightful atmosphere for strolling.
A must-see attraction is the “Longest Nativity Scene in Austria,” stretching 46 meters and based on paintings by Josef Ritter von Führich from 1830.
Just across the road, visitors can explore a farmers market offering specialty cheeses. The Bergkäse (mountain cheese) comes highly recommended for those looking to sample local flavors.
