When it comes to the Christmas season and markets, Vienna is always among the first cities mentioned. The Wiener Christkindlmarkt am Rathausplatz is a centerpiece among all the markets.
Over 100 booths offer a wide range of products such as handicrafts, decorations, and toys from local entrepreneurs. This market has a long history dating back to 1600 when it was called “Thomas Market” got its name from one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Since then, it has transformed significantly while still maintaining the same Christmas atmosphere.
Another traditional highlight of the Wiener Christkindlmarkt am Rathausplatz is the Christmas tree. Since 1959, a different Austrian municipality has donated one of its stately conifers each year, adding to the beautiful landscape.
