You’ve probably heard about Mercado dos Lavradores, a farmers market, on the beautiful island of Madeira, Funchal but if not, let us tell you.
Madeira, one of two autonomous regions of Portugal, is a popular tourist destination known for its vibrant farmers market, Mercado dos Lavradores. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, offering a rainbow of exotic fruits and vegetables. As an island, Madeira is also renowned for its fresh fish, including the not so appealing looking but delicious black scabbardfish (peixe-espada-preto). In its 9,600 square meters, you’ll find cheese, spices, herbs, and flowers.
Mercado dos Lavradores is also notable for its architecture, designed by Edmundo Taveres and inaugurated in 1940. The building is a prime example of Portugal’s Estado Novo regime, blending Modernism and Art Deco. It wasn’t a portugal building if it wasn’t feature azulejos (tiles) inside and outside, which are painted by João Rodrigues.
