Basel Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt Basel) is one of the largest and most popular Christmas markets in Switzerland. Located mainly at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, the market features around 150 wooden stalls selling handmade crafts, Christmas ornaments, jewellery, local products and gift items. At Münsterplatz, visitors can also admire a large decorated Christmas tree set against the impressive backdrop of Basel Cathedral, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Visitors can enjoy Swiss raclette, grilled sausages, waffles, gingerbread and Basler Läckerli, a traditional local spiced biscuit. Mulled wine and other hot drinks are also available throughout the market. One of the main attractions is the 13-metre-high Christmas pyramid at Barfüsserplatz, which serves as a popular meeting point. The market is also spread across other parts of the city, including Claraplatz and Theaterplatz. One of the main events of Basel Christmas Market is writing down your wishes at the traditional Basel Wish Book, it is openly accessible in the inner courtyard of the City Hall for all members of the public (both local residents and tourists). Visitors can fill the book with their private thoughts, wish lists for Santa Claus or their hope for the world.
