The Gouda weekly market is held every Thursday and Saturday on the square around the historic City Hall of Gouda, the Netherlands. On Thursdays mornings, you’ll find approximately thirty stalls offering a variety of products. The Saturday market runs longer, well into the afternoon, with around forty stalls.
This traditional Dutch “warenmarkt” (goods market) features a selection of goods including fresh fruits and vegetables, bread and pastries, and cheese stalls offering Gouda cheese and other Dutch and foreign dairy products. You’ll find fresh fish stands and stalls selling fried fish to eat on the spot, alongside freshly made stroopwafels prepared while you watch. Textile vendors display clothing, fabrics, and household linens, while flower stalls showcase seasonal blooms and plants. Spice merchants offer various herbs and seasonings for home cooking.
Specialty stalls sell olive oils, various tapenades, interesting bric-a-brac items, and pet supplies including food, treats, and accessories.
Gouda weekly market tips
- The best cheese stall at the market is of Zuivelspecialist Leo Versluis: great selection, good prices, but most of all, super kind service!
- If you’re searching for the perfect souvenir from the Netherlands, don’t miss Leo’s stall where you can also buy an authentic Boska kaasschaaf (cheese slicer). This ingenious tool is an essential part of every Dutch kitchen. It is designed to cut perfect, thin slices from any block of cheese. While you can find a cheese slicer at various shops and brands, Boska is an award-winning product that is generally considered to be the best.
- From April through August, the famous Gouda cheese market takes place alongside the regular weekly market, showcasing the city’s renowned cheese-making heritage.
