The Valkenburg Christmas market is one of the most unique and enchanting holiday events in the Netherlands. Located in the picturesque town of Valkenburg aan de Geul, in the southern province of Limburg, this Christmas market is known for its extraordinary setting and festive atmosphere.
The Valkenburg Christmas markets take place in underground caves. It is the largest underground Christmas market in Europe. Visitors can explore beautifully decorated underground passageways and chambers filled with Christmas stalls, creating a magical subterranean world. There are two Christmas market caves: the Gemeentegrot (Municipal Cave) and Fluweelengrot (Velvet Cave).
The market offers a variety of traditional and artisanal Christmas gifts, decorations, and crafts. You can find everything from handmade ornaments to regional delicacies. Dutch and international seasonal treats are abundant in the market. Enjoy Dutch poffertjes (mini pancakes), waffles, glühwein (mulled wine), and other culinary delights.
IMPORTANT: There is an entrance fee for the Valkenburg Christmas market (€9 during the week, €10 during the weekend). The caves do not have a ticket office. Tickets for the Christmas markets in the Municipal Cave and the Velvet Cave must be purchased online. Both caves are wheelchair accessible and dogs are not allowed.
