Every Saturday morning, about 100 vendors set up stalls for the Toucy Weekly Market (Le marché de Toucy) across three streets in the charming Burgundian town: rue Lucile-Cormier, rue Philippe-Verger, and rue Paul-Bert. The stalls wind around Place de l’Hôtel de Ville and Place de la République in a circular route through the town centre.
The market has been running since medieval times and was voted Burgundy’s best in 2018. You’ll find plenty of local farmers selling seasonal vegetables and fruits, with organic options becoming more common. There are several charcutiers offering the famous braised ham of Puisaye, plus other prepared meats. Cheese stalls overflow with regional varieties, and you can get farm-fresh eggs and ready-to-cook farm chickens.
A few vendors still sell live chickens, ducks, and rabbits, either for keeping or eating. You can also find escargots, fresh oysters, local honey, and ready-made dishes like roasted chicken. There are some unusual items too, like northern French waffles filled with brown sugar and Guadeloupean cod fritters. Look out for Fras de Moutiers, a savoury cheese tart with medieval origins.
The Toucy weekly market is the perfect place to discover Burgundian gastronomy, including the famous Burgundy wines. In addition to food, the market also offers handicrafts, home decor, clothing, and local souvenirs. There’s still a basket weaver selling handmade baskets.
Expect crowds, especially in summer when Parisians with weekend houses show up. Parking gets tricky and you might have to queue at popular stalls, but that’s normal. Most vendors are small local producers who’ve been coming for years. It’s a proper working market, not just for tourists.
