The Altwiener Ostermarkt (Old Viennese Easter Market on Freyung) is held annually at Freyung, a historic square in Vienna’s Old City. Its centrepiece is Europe’s largest “egg tower,” featuring an impressive display of around 40,000 painted Easter eggs.
The market offers a wide range of Easter specialties, like the traditional Osterpinze (Easter bread), roasted lamb, Kaiserschmarrn, langos, raclette, and artisanal cheeses, alongside sweet treats such as macarons, pretzels, and local chocolates.
The market is particularly known for its artisanal crafts, featuring hand-painted Easter eggs, Ukrainian-style wooden decorations, handmade jewellery, traditional Blaudruck textiles (blueprint), and ceramic works. Visitors can also find unique gifts like natural soaps, lavender products, handcrafted leather goods, and locally-produced gin, while children can enjoy the craft workshop and stage performances.
Vienna’s Christmas markets are famous worldwide, but the city’s Easter markets are just as magical, a celebration of spring. These Easter markets feature an array of charming stalls offering handcrafted Easter decorations, and seasonal delicacies.
