The Obernai Christmas Market (Le Marché de Noël d’Obernai) transforms the picturesque Alsatian town into a winter wonderland from late November through December. Unlike the famous Christmas markets of larger cities such as Strasbourg or Colmar, Obernai offers a more intimate experience across its four historic squares – Place du Marché, Place du Beffroi, Place de l’Etoile, and Place Neher. The locals even have a word for this – “heimlich” – that cozy feeling of warmth and magic that defines a true Alsatian Christmas.
45 wooden chalets, arranged thoughtfully throughout the squares, showcase the region’s finest artisans and producers. Food lovers will enjoy in the Marché de la Gastronomie de Noël en Alsace (Christmas Gastronomy Market in Alsace). It features local delicacies such as foie gras, salted meats, bredeles (traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies), Christmas beer, and homemade jams.
One local tradition not to be missed is gathering around the winegrowers’ cauldron for a unique specialty – white mulled wine from Obernois. This distinctive beverage, crafted with white wine and spices, is as much about gathering around the cauldron as it is about the delicious taste.
Beyond delicious food and drinks, artisans offer items like hanging baskets, ceramics, wooden objects, and hand-blown glass ornaments – perfect for decorating your Christmas tree or as gifts.
There are also concerts, storytelling walks, and various seasonal activities taking place throughout Advent at the Obernai Christmas Market.
