The Nuremberg Christmas Market (Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt) is one of the oldest and most famous Christmas markets in the world. It features around 150 stalls offering a wide variety of traditional German Christmas items and food. Visitors will find many Christmas decorations including Christmas stars, tree ornaments, and the typical Nuremberg gold-foil angels. Vendors sell nativity scenes with accessories, wooden carvings, and miniatures that represent traditional German craftsmanship.
Food is a major attraction, with Nuremberg grilled sausages being one of the most popular items. The city’s famous gingerbread (Lebkuchen) is available in different varieties, including the special Elisen gingerbread. Visitors can warm up with mulled wine (Glühwein) sold at several stands throughout the market. Sweet offerings include toasted almonds, fruit loaf, pancakes, and Belgian pralines. The Feuerzangenbowle (a traditional German punch) is another specialty drink option. Regional foods like Franconian pastries, yeast dumplings, and potato fritters provide substantial options for hungry shoppers.
For gifts, the market sells handcrafted wooden toys, handmade teddy bears, candles, knitwear, and leather goods. Specialty food gifts include tea and spice blends. Other items for sale are jewellery, hats, ceramics, glass objects, minerals, handmade soaps, and beeswax products.
A unique feature of the Nuremberg Christmas Market is the traditional “Prune Men” (Zwetschgenmännle) – figurines made from dried prunes that are popular souvenirs. The Market of Partner Cities section offers products from Nuremberg’s sister cities, with sales supporting charitable causes.
Beyond shopping, there’s a Children’s Christmas Market with activities for kids, cultural programs at the Star House, and stage coach rides around the historic market area.
