The Innsbruck Altstadt Christmas Market is one of the several Christmas markets that take place in Innsbruck, capital of Austria’s western state of Tyrol. Nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps, the city turns into a winter wonderland for the holiday season. Set against the stunning backdrop of snow-capped peaks and the city’s historic architecture, this market is a cherished and magical tradition.
In the heart of Innsbruck’s old town, surrounded by medieval buildings, you’ll find the city’s most traditional Christmas market. Over 70 rustic stalls cluster around a beautifully lit Christmas tree, with an array of handcrafted gifts, artisanal crafts, and traditional ornaments.
There’s lot to taste at the market. Food vendors offer a tempting selection of Austrian holiday treats, from freshly baked pastries and roasted chestnuts to gingerbread cookies and sausages. Don’t miss kiachl, a Tyrolean yeast dough specialty. It can be enjoyed either sweet with cranberry sauce and powdered sugar or savoury with sauerkraut.
Entertainment is an integral part of the Innsbruck Altstadt Christmas Market. The alleys of the Altstadt are transformed into the magical Fairy Tale and Giants Alley (Märchen- und Riesengasse) with a number of large papier-mâché sculptures of popular fairy tales characters such as The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, or Snow White. The fairy tale stage on the Kiebachgasse has a number of shows for kids and grownups alike.
Every day until December 28th at 5:30pm, tower musicians play Christmas music from atop the Goldenen Dachl (Golden Roof). For the best view of both the musicians and this famous landmark, head to the large terrace in the centre of the market.
