Hala Mirowska, an imposing neighborhood landmark with twin Hala Gwardii, built from 1899 to 1901 by order of Russian mayor Nikolai Bibikov, served as Warsaw’s largest market until the Warsaw Uprising.
After serving as a bus depot in the post-war years, in the ’50s it got back its original structure and nowadays it’s known for its flower stalls, as well as lines of country folk selling jars of mushrooms fom their backs of their vans. The outdoor food market offers fresh produce on a daily basis directly from the countryside around Warsaw. The quality of Hala Mirowska is not comparable to the ones you can get in the supermarket.
Fun fact: Despite the fire’s devastation, the resilient walls held firm, and the structures endured. Check ou the lingering bullet scars at Pl. Mirowski and Jana Pawła II corner.
