The Dijon market hall (Halles de Dijon) is an indoor market hall in Dijon, the capital city of the historical Burgundy region in eastern France, one of the country’s principal wine regions.
The indoor market hall is open four days a week on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. With the exception of Thursday there’s also an outdoor market right outside the market hall and spreading over the streets of Soissons, place de la Banque, rues Bannelier, Odebert, Quentin, Ramey, place Grangier, rue and place François Rude, and rue Musette.
The market offers a wide array of local fresh produce, cheeses, breads, charcuterie, seafood and more. It’s a beautiful food market where visitors can shop alongside locals and experience the specialties of the region such as pig’s feet and ears in aspic, jambon persillé (parsley ham), snails, Dijon mustard, jams, sweet pastries and more. It’s the ideal place to stock up for a picnic.
The modus operandi for Dijon locals is to buy a takeaway plate of oysters at the seafood counter and enjoy them with a glass of wine at La Buvette des Halles, a bistro inside the market. If you are not an oyster fan you can also pick up charcuterie and cheese at any of the stalls and enjoy it at the buvette. I spotted locals eating slices of ham straight out of the wax paper.
The outdoor market has everything from produce and eggs to non-food items like clothing and souvenirs.
Visiting this market is one of those simple, yet unforgettable French experiences. It’s a great activity for a a rainy day as well.
