Every December for a long weekend the centre of Haarlem turns into a magical Christmas market. It is one of the biggest Christmas markets in The Netherlands, featuring nearly 350 stalls spread across 12 locations throughout the city center. Haarlem, located just a short train ride away from Amsterdam, is known for its charming, cobblestone streets and picturesque canals, making it an ideal setting for a Christmas market. The market takes place on several squares and streets of town, such as the Grote Markt, Botermarkt, Koningstraat, Gierstraat, Grote Houtstraat, Frankestraat, Schagghelstraat, Warmousstraat, Kruisstraat, and Zijlstraat.
A special highlight occurs on Saturday and Sunday when the Schagchelstraat and Kleine Houtstraat transform into “Emma’s Street,” where visitors can step back in time to experience a genuine 19th-century Christmas celebration and a medieval Christmas street. The market offers an extensive entertainment program, with Saturday and Sunday featuring numerous performances throughout the city centre, both indoor and outdoor. Friday offers a slightly more peaceful experience for those who prefer to avoid the weekend crowds.
This Christmas market is an excellent place to find unique and locally made gifts and decorations, making it a popular destination for holiday shopping. Don’t miss the opportunity to try Dutch holiday treats like oliebollen (a type of fried dough ball), Dutch waffles, and hot chocolate.
Market tips
- Arrive by public transport – The market is within walking distance of Haarlem’s main train station.
- Prepare for crowds – It can get very busy, especially on Saturday and Sunday. If you’d prefer a more relaxed experience, visit on Friday during the day.
- Wear comfy shoes – You’ll be on your feet for hours exploring the stalls.
- Check the weather forecast before visiting – Dutch winter weather can be unpredictable. Snow is rare but rain is always a possibility in December. Dress in layers to stay comfortable.
- Bring both cash and card – While the Netherlands is generally card-friendly, some vendors prefer cash, while others may only accept cards. Having both means you won’t miss out.
- Verify opening hours and special events – Always check the official website or social media before your visit for any schedule changes. We included links below to the organiser’s website.
