The Auer Dult is a traditional market festival held three times a year in Munich, Germany, specifically in the Au-Haidhausen district. Each festival lasts for 9 days and has a history dating back to the 14th century. In the 18th century, the Electoral Prince Karl Theodore initiated biannual fairs, which eventually evolved into the regular event we know today, starting from 1905.
“Dult” is an old Bavarian word that comes from the medieval German word “tult” or “tuld,” which means a church feast or festival. In modern usage, particularly in Bavaria and Austria, a “Dult” refers to a traditional folk festival that includes a market and fairground attractions.
The Auer Dult is a combination of several events:
- A traditional market with around 300 vendors selling household goods, ceramics, clothing, traditional crafts, art and antiques
- A pottery market that’s one of the largest in Germany
- Fairground attractions and rides, including historic carousels
- Food stalls serving traditional Bavarian specialties such as beer and fish-on-a-stick, barbecued sausages, and chicken
- Various entertainment programs and activities
The festival takes place at Mariahilfplatz, in front of the Mariahilfkirche (Church of Our Lady of Help) in the Au district. It’s smaller and more traditional than Munich’s famous Oktoberfest, and it’s particularly popular with local families and those interested in traditional Bavarian culture.
At the Auer Dult, you’ll find everything from handcrafted essentials like wickerwork, sun hats, bamboo socks, and traditional felt slippers to unique treasures like antique books, Biedermeier furniture, and oil paintings. The market is also known for practical household items, with vendors enthusiastically demonstrating innovative kitchen gadgets, organic cleaning products, and traditional household tools like wooden spoons and specialised baking pans.
