The Advent Market in Garsten (Garstner Advent) is a Christmas market in the idyllic town of Garsten in Upper Austria. The Christmas market takes place on two weekends during the Advent season. It is one of Austria’s oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets. It was once featured in an ORF documentary about the country’s top four Advent markets.
The Christmas market takes place at at the Am Platzl, in front of the historic baroque church, Stiftskirche. Since its beginnings in 1977, the Christmas market has strived to express the region’s authentic holiday traditions. The focus on traditional craftsmanship is evident in the high-quality, unique items available for purchase, making it an excellent place to find special holiday gifts.
The motto of the market is “Kunst und Köstlichkeiten” (art and delicacies). Culinary delights are a highlight of the Garsten Advent Market. Traditional Austrian dishes, such as sausages, potato dishes, and pastries, are served alongside seasonal favourites like roasted chestnuts and mulled wine. The market provides a perfect opportunity to try the rich flavours of Austrian cuisine.
In addition to the market and exhibitions, the Advent market in Garsten always offers an exquisite supporting program with musical and literary performances, carriage rides, a special post office, alpacas and organ concerts in the former collegiate church.
