The Hamburg Fish Market is held every Sunday morning around and inside the historic Altona Fish Auction Hall (Altonaer Fischauktionshalle), a protected monument on the banks of the Elbe river.
Outside, a general market surrounds the hall with fish vendors, food trucks, fruit and vegetables, clothes, household items, flowers, candy and more. Many of the vendors put on a bit of a show for shoppers.
But the real fun is inside the legendary hall. This is where early risers meet people just back from the clubs every Sunday morning. You can sit at long tables, drink beer, eat fish sandwiches, and dance and sing along to live bands playing hits from the 60s to 90s, country, rock, and today’s best. The music has become an iconic part of the market.
Visitors can find fish sandwiches, crab, herring, and hot and cold drinks at the various stalls. There’s no brunch service at the tables, but you can take a seat with what you have purchased at different vendors.
